Nurses from the Social Health Center sensitized students at the Ngoa-Ekelle campus of the University of Yaoundé 1 on sexual and reproductive health during a two-day campaign held from May 11 to 12, 2026.
The campaign, focused on “Reproductive Health of Adolescents and Youth” ,equipped university students with essential knowledge through interactive discussions with medical professionals.
Nurses addressed critical topics including the definition of pregnancy and abortion, factors contributing to unwanted pregnancies, and the various consequences of abortion and early childbearing. They highlighted medical risks such as hemorrhage, infections, infertility, premature birth, and tetanus, alongside psychological effects like depression, guilt, and low self-esteem, as well as social consequences including school dropout, family rejection, and stigma.
“ ….the campaign is more of sensitizing the youths on the adverse impact of early reproduction on their lives and the other illnesses that come with it and also how to cure this illnesses” says Ngo Amelie one of the nurses from Social Health Center
The sessions also covered post-abortion care options, contraception methods and counseling services. Organizers promoted accessible youth-friendly services available at the Centre Médico-Social (CMS) and it partners Centre de Promotion des Jeunes (CMPJ)
Strong messages encouraged students to seek confidential care at medico-social centers and to break the silence around sexual and reproductive health issues.
Students showed keen interest throughout the two days, departing with practical knowledge to better protect their health and future. This on-campus effort reflects a growing commitment to providing Cameroonian youth with accurate facts for informed choices in reproductive matters.
