internet access in Cameroon remains unstable, affecting both urban centers like Yaoundé and rural communities. Despite the country’s connection to submarine fiber optic cables, users continue to experience slow speeds, high costs, and frequent service interruptions. These challenges make it difficult for people to work, study, and access essential online services. Frequent delays when loading websites, joining video calls, or completing online tasks have become common. Telecom operators such as MTN, Orange, and CAMTEL are often criticized for slow responses to these issues, pushing users to develop their own solutions to stay connected. One common measure is the use of VPNs. Some users believe VPNs help improve connection stability by routing traffic through more efficient paths. Another widespread tactic is carrying multiple SIM cards from different operators and switching between networks depending on which one offers better service at a given time. However, these coping strategies come at a cost. Purchasing multiple data bundles, subscribing to VPN services, and investing in connectivity tools make internet access increasingly expensive for the average Cameroonian user.
